Today, Susan Hales encourages us to honor our bodies, for we have been bought with a price. 

“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NLT). 

I recall the shock when I heard this scripture read aloud in a Christian recovery group. It certainly was not how I had been living. 

The belief that sex is only for heterosexual marriage and that premarital sex is unacceptable to God is not popular in the world. Single couples living together rather than marrying is so common. Being single for so long made it difficult for me to obey and follow this scripture. 

When I meditate on this scripture, I make it personal by saying, “God bought me with a high price.” God created me, Jesus died for me, and the Holy Spirit lives in me. Jesus paid the price for me, for you, for everyone.   

When we are in Christ, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. When we sin, the Holy Spirit grieves. He also convicts us of our sin, but we know that lavish forgiveness is offered freely when we fall short. 

We are image bearers, created in the likeness of God. So, we offer our bodies as living sacrifices to Him. Whether we are married or single, Jesus should be the center of our deepest desires and affections.  

Honoring your body requires obedience and radical dependence on the Holy Spirit. Today, choose to run from sexual sin and other sinful behaviors in which you dishonor your body.
