Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Jul 25, 2024    Kelsey Wickenhauser

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Kelsey Wickenhauser.

"Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established" (Proverbs 16:3 ESV).

Lately, I’ve felt like the Little Engine that Could, except in an unhealthy way. “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

Because I can, right? I am a strong, able-bodied, intelligent, and stubborn woman who can do anything I put my mind to… right? After all, that’s how I’ve gotten to this point. I put my shoulder to the plow and got to work.

Lately, however, all my effort and striving have kept me spinning without meeting my self-prescribed expectations. I believe God has called me into a season to parent little kids, homeschool, run a business, and stay involved in medicine… but I feel like I’m thriving in none of these areas.

Suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks. The “I, me, my” was exactly the problem. I love Jesus and want to advance His Kingdom, yet I am still trying to operate out of my own strength. I was reminded that true freedom is not trying to muscle out my next venture and invite God to bless it. True freedom is letting go of my agenda, walking with the Spirit, letting go of anxiety, and remembering that our future is sure because Jesus died on the cross and freed us from the chains of sin and death.

God recently gave me my life song, and I want to share some lyrics with you.

“To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus

For my life is wholly bound to His

Oh how strange and divine, I can sing, "All is mine"

Yet not I, but through Christ in me” (Yet Not I, but Through Christ in Me by CityAlight)

If you’re like me and stuck in a cycle of trying to figure it all out, I invite you to lay it down instead. Please share how you struggle/succeed with laying it down. Let’s support one another so when our race is complete; we can say none of it was “me but rather Christ within me.
