Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion was written by Jessica Gerth.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25 ESV).
I saw his body begin to fatigue and recognized the discomfort on his face. It was the longest race of his college career. He closed his eyes, and when they opened again, a visible shift - focus, breathe, push through the pain. Visualize the finish line.
The body will keep going long after your mind wants to quit.
My oldest two children are distance runners. Some say they are wired differently, but that’s not it. Discomfort appears for them as it does for everyone: burning legs, short breath, their muscles, and their mind screaming that it hurts too much. The difference is they expect it. They plan for it. And they respond rather than react to it.
Paul uses the verse above to encourage believers to be intentional in their spiritual training, much like athletes discipline their bodies for their sport. Becoming self-controlled is crucial in our spiritual life, enabling us to grow stronger in our faith and prepare ourselves for the challenges we face.
My greatest challenge in mastering my thoughts, emotions, and actions is allowing the Spirit to lead me. Self-control is spiritual.
It’s saying “yes” to righteousness and “no” to temptation. It’s choosing every day to focus on my calling above life’s distractions. It’s staying composed in the middle of the storm. God is always in control, but He doesn’t always take control. We must be intentional about accepting the gifts He gives.
Our race is not in vain, and the Spirit trains us through trials. God promises an imperishable wreath to those who are willing to endure. Discomfort, distractions, and disappointments are inevitable.
Make it a daily choice to align your thoughts with God’s word. Choosing discipline leads to growth, and growing in self-control brings us closer to our eternal prize.
