Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion is written by Chelsea Durre.

“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me ---put it into practice. And the God of Peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9 NIV).

Our oldest son decided to join the military. I wasn’t immediately concerned because most teen’s plans change often. However, near the end of his junior year, I felt more fear consuming my heart as his desires did not waver. As moms, our minds go directly to the worst-case scenario. We think about all the potential dangers our child could experience, and in every way imaginable: mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When we first met with the Air Force recruiter, I came with many questions but left with the same concerns. I didn’t really expect that part to change much, but I felt my peace being hijacked by my foreboding and fear.

Philippians 4:9 is an all-encompassing verse. This verse tells us to put into practice what we have learned, and we can only do that by staying rooted in God’s word. The Bible has taught me so much, and with practice, I’ve been able to tap into the peace God promises by memorizing scripture.

Isaiah 41:13 tells us not to fear, and Philippians 4:8 reminds us to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy. When I feel fear and worry creep in, I imagine God taking my right hand and saying, “Do not fear.” When I let negative thoughts take over, I change my mindset and focus on what Philippians 4:8 tells us. How noble, praiseworthy, and admirable is it for our son to be serving our country? How excellent is it that he has planned his future on his own, is confident in what he wants to do, and will get to travel God’s country? Continue to put into practice what you have learned, and you will have the peace you desire.
