Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotional is written by Tara Thompson.

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1 KJV).

Why is it that some sins feel impossible to shake? No matter how we try, they keep showing up at the door of our hearts. Some sins are easy for me to spot and resist, such as the temptation to rob a bank, lie on my taxes, or physically harm others. These don’t even cross my mind. But others slip in unnoticed - the quick snap of impatience when I’m interrupted, the judgmental thought I entertain for a moment, or the worry I allow to linger instead of trusting God. They don’t seem “big,” yet they reveal how easily sin can take root in our hearts.

There is a sobering truth hidden in Hebrews 12:1: sin is sneaky. It often creeps in quietly, takes root, and before long, has us tangled. Scripture says it “so easily besets us”. We don’t have to try to stumble into sin; our human nature gravitates toward it. Pride, anger, lust, gossip, unforgiveness — all ready to trip us up. When we leave it unchecked, it becomes a cycle, a repeated snare that weighs down our spirit and interrupts our fellowship with the Lord.

But Hebrews doesn’t just warn us — it calls us to action: lay it aside. That phrase is intentional. It means to reject or give it up to make progress. We cannot do this in our own strength; it’s a daily choice of surrender, laying our sin at the foot of the cross, and allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to free us.

Whatever sins “so easily beset us,” we can remember Jesus already bore those sins on Calvary. We don’t have to carry them anymore. His grace forgives and empowers us to walk in freedom.

What weight do you need to set aside? What pattern resurfaces, pulling you away from the closeness you desire with Him?
