Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today, Sharee Gaiser explores the allure of gossip and offers practical advice on how to resist its pull.
“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want” (Galatians 5:17 NIV).
My friend leaned in and lowered her voice as we sat watching a group of ladies across the room. “Did you hear what happened?” she asked. Immediately, I felt a tug in my heart. I knew she was about to share something that would tickle my ears and stir my curiosity. A part of me wanted to lean in closer, to hear every detail. But another part—quieter, yet unmistakably present—urged me to stop, to walk away, or to change the subject.
We all experience this internal battle: the desire to do good and the pull of our sinful nature. Galatians 5:17 puts words to that struggle—our flesh and the Spirit are in conflict. Gossip may seem small, even socially acceptable, but it is a spiritual battleground. Each time we choose not to engage, we are choosing to walk by the Spirit.
As women, our words hold power—power to build up or tear down. Gossip often disguises itself as harmless conversation, but it feeds the flesh and opposes the Spirit. When we feel the urge to share that juicy detail or speak about someone behind their back, it's a signal: the flesh is loud, but the Spirit is whispering.
Victory in this struggle comes not from our willpower, but from surrender. We must pause, pray, and listen for the Spirit’s guidance. When we do, He gives us the strength to speak life, not rumors. Truth, not assumption. Grace, not gossip.
Today, let’s be women who resist the urge to feed the flesh and instead choose the harder, holier path. Let our conversations reflect the heart of Christ—uplifting, pure, and Spirit-led.
Lord, help me recognize the battle within and choose Your Spirit over my flesh. Teach me to guard my words and to speak with love, grace, and truth. Amen.
