Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion is written by Andi Benson.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, keep your thoughts on whatever is right or deserves praise: things that are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, or commendable” (Philippians 4:8 GW).

Self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit, yet it remains one of the most challenging virtues to cultivate. In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and pressures, remaining steadfast and disciplined often feels beyond our reach. However, Philippians 4 offers insights into where we can focus our thoughts and gain God’s strength to exercise self-control.

As Christ followers who are also imperfect people, we can struggle with self-control issues in our lives. In my personal experience, I have found they often present themselves as challenges related to mindset. I take pride in my independence and strive for perfectionism and success. However, acknowledging my difficulties or seeking assistance when I am not able to control sin in my life does not come naturally to me. When faced with self-control challenges, my pride and stubbornness lead me to believe I can manage the situation independently. This belief is what the bible describes as pride and deters me from seeking God for help.

Paul tells us that self-control begins with surrender. Instead of relying solely on our willpower, we are called to bring our struggles to God in prayer. His peace guards our hearts and minds, providing the stability we need to choose wisely. Further, Philippians 4:8 encourages us to focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. We create an internal environment that nurtures self-control by filling our minds with these virtues. When our thoughts align with God’s truth, our actions will follow.

Self-control is not about perfection but about persistence. When life is out of control, we should turn to God, meditate on His truth, and depend on His strength. Here is where we can develop a disciplined heart that reflects His glory.
