Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Sharon Gomez shares about remaining steadfast in self-control.

"Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city" (Proverbs 16:32 NIV).

We've all heard the saying: “The heart wants what the heart wants.” I have always struggled with "big feelings" and spent many years living life by the roadmap of my emotions. Thankfully, the Lord gave us the Bible as a guide to living, and if we are looking for advice on wisdom, the book of Proverbs is the place to start.

King Solomon most likely wrote this chapter of Proverbs, and today's verse refers to warriors and city takeovers, which at the time were relatable metaphors for the characteristics of power and strength.

In our lives today, we don't experience warriors at a backyard barbeque or live in fear of a city takeover, but I have come across people in my life who use their loud voices or physical stature to "bully" their way into a popular opinion.

Regardless of how "big feelings" show themselves, the underlying message of Proverbs 16:32 is that patience and self-control are more powerful than pushy self-righteousness. We are reminded that wisdom produces humility, and self-control becomes a by-product.

When we see troubling events in the news, have relationship conflicts, or experience less-than-desirable circumstances, wisdom can be replaced with worry, and humility can be replaced with pride. Self-control might take a back seat, causing us to seek comfort in overindulgence in food, spending, isolation, or any other activity that provides a temporary, false sense of relief.

Only through our relationship with God and with the help of the Holy Spirit can we remain steadfast in self-control and uphold God-honoring behavior. Reflect on the struggle you are facing today and ask the Holy Spirit to come into that area of your life.
