Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today, Susan Hales calls us to stop running and place our trust in the Good Shepherd.

“He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young” (Isaiah 40:11 ESV).

I ran away from God for thirty-one years, searching for the freedom to do as I pleased. However, my plan didn’t work out. While I was running away from God, He was running after me.

Isaiah Chapter 40 describes how God comforted His people who were exiled to Babylon for their continual disobedience. After Israel’s release from captivity, the Gentle Shepherd tenderly leads and carries His weak and defenseless flock back into the fold.

Sheep desperately need a shepherd because they often go astray and get into trouble. They are defenseless and easy prey for wolves, lions, and bears. What’s even worse, sheep cannot right themselves when on their backs. Only the shepherd can help them. In fact, shepherds often faced deadly peril, sometimes sacrificing their lives for their flocks.

We are like sheep and need a shepherd, too. Jesus is our Good Shepherd because He protects and guides us. Without the Good Shepherd, we’re hopelessly lost. He knows the only path to righteousness, the standard of right behavior God set out in His Word for us to follow. But we can’t do it alone.

We only achieve righteousness by choosing to follow Jesus because He sacrificed His life on the cross for His sheep (John 10:11,15).

I thought I was free while living my life as I pleased, but I had lost my way. Jesus showed me the way back to life. He is my Good Shepherd, who chased me down and gently led me back into the fold.

Are you running away from God? Place your trust in the Good Shepherd, believe He gave His life for you and follow His way.
