Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion is written by Karen Wardle.

“Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly” (Proverbs 14:29 ESV).

My dear sisters in Christ. Patience isn’t just a virtue—it’s a mark of spiritual maturity. Proverbs 14:29 tells us that being slow to anger, slow to act impulsively, is a sign of great understanding. But the one who acts hastily, out of impatience or self-will, exalts folly. This is a hard truth to swallow, especially when our hearts long for good things—marriage, ministry, purpose. But even good things can become stumbling blocks if pursued outside God’s will or timing.

When I was young, I was enthusiastic about becoming a missionary. I thought my heart was wholly devoted to Jesus, but in hindsight, I see how self-focused I truly was. I craved a purpose, yes, but I also craved companionship. I wanted to be married quickly. So, I tried to force open the doors to the mission field, convincing myself it was God’s plan when it was actually mine. I didn’t wait well.

I married the first man headed to the mission field who showed me interest. That marriage became a long season of hardship and regret. Not because I didn’t love God, but because I didn’t wait for His timing, His will, and His best. My impatience exalted folly, just as Proverbs warns.

Dear sisters, hear my heart: God’s will is never rushed. His timing is never off. If He withholds something today, it is because He is preparing something better—either in the blessing itself or in you. Waiting is not passive; it is active trust in the One who knows and sees all.

Don’t waste your waiting by grasping for control. Surrender it. Offer it to God as worship. Ask Him to shape your desires into His desires. Let Him prepare your heart so you’re not just chasing a calling or a spouse—but Him.

The mission field may not be across the globe. Sometimes, it’s the battlefield of your own heart.

Wait well, dear friends; He is worth it.
