Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion is written by Karen Wardle.

Our verse for today is, “…speak evil of no one, … avoid quarreling, … be gentle, and… show perfect courtesy toward all people” (Titus 3:2 ESV).

Where in my life do I need to cultivate more gentleness? How can I model the spirit of Titus 3:2 today?

The Word of God calls us to a life marked not by contention, but by grace. In Titus 3:2, the Apostle Paul instructs believers to be known for gentleness, avoiding quarrels, and extending courtesy to all. This is not a suggestion for the easy moments of life, but a command for every circumstance, including those marked by disagreement and tension.

Gentleness is an often-misunderstood virtue. Some equate it with weakness or a lack of conviction, but in reality, gentleness flows from a heart deeply anchored in Christ. It is the deliberate choice to maintain strength while refusing the weapons of harshness, anger, or pride.

Reflecting on my own experience, I have found that political discussions lead to frustration and anger. One time, I was with a friend who had a vastly different viewpoint from mine. I felt myself getting a bit hot under the collar. Deliberately, I supported my own viewpoint but in a quiet and gentle manner, then found a way to segue to a softer topic. The quality of gentleness is that of having a meek and mild spirit.

When we practice gentleness, we do not deny truth, nor do we compromise principle. Instead, we embody the very spirit of Titus 3:2—speaking evil of no one, refusing to engage in quarrels, and showing perfect courtesy even when disagreement persists. In this way, our demeanor becomes a powerful testimony, one that is often louder than words themselves.

Today, ask the Lord to cultivate in you a spirit that answers strife with softness, holds convictions firmly yet quietly, and reflects His gentleness in all conversations. The world is full of harsh voices; let yours be different, marked by the beauty of meekness and the strength of a quiet and tender heart.

Prayer: “Lord, create in me a gentle and quiet spirit that reflects Your love to all people. Help me to be strong in You, yet tender toward others. Amen.”
