Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today’s devotion is written by Andi Benson.
Our verse for today is, “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near” Philippians 4:5 NIV).
Gentleness is often mistaken for weakness in today’s world. But in God’s kingdom, gentleness is a strength—a quiet, steady power rooted in love, patience, and humility. When we respond with gentleness, especially in the face of conflict or misunderstanding, we reflect the character of Christ.
Jesus, though fully God, consistently responded with compassion and gentleness. Whether He was correcting the Pharisees, welcoming children, or speaking with the woman caught in adultery, His words carried grace, truth, and an invitation to transformation. He was never harsh out of frustration, nor did He shame others into obedience. His gentleness disarmed hostility and opened hearts to receive healing and hope.
As followers of Christ, we are called to respond in the same spirit. When someone offends us or tensions rise, our natural instinct may be to defend ourselves or speak sharply. But the Holy Spirit invites us to pause, breathe, and choose gentleness. This doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations or ignoring sin. It means addressing them with humility, patience, and love.
Gentleness is not passive; it is power under control. It requires strength to hold back harsh words, to listen with empathy, and to extend grace when it's undeserved. But when we do, we invite God's peace into our relationships and become instruments of His love.
Philippians 4:5 reminds us that “The Lord is near.” His presence enables us to respond, not from our strength, but from His. When we lean into Him, He equips us to be gentle even when it’s hard. And through that gentleness, He brings healing—both to others and to our own hearts.
Where is God calling you to respond with gentleness today? Is there a relationship or situation where His Spirit is nudging you to lay down pride and pick up His peace? Ask the Lord to teach us to respond with gentleness, and be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Let’s be filled with His Spirit so that we reflect His heart in every word and action.
