Freely Speaking Audio Devotion
Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.
Today, Sharee Gaiser shares about the benefits of choosing self-control.
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'” (Romans 12:19 ESV)
Have you ever had that feeling when hurt, that hurting someone in return is a way of getting even? As a teacher, I have witnessed many altercations escalate due to a need for revenge. “She hit me first”, one would cry, justifying why a friend’s hair was pulled. If we have suffered, justice often means that the one who has hurt us must hurt as much as we do.
As women, we often face moments when our hearts ache from hurt, betrayal or injustice. It’s tempting to want to take matters into our own hands—to respond quickly, to defend ourselves, or to seek revenge. Yet, God gently reminds us in this verse that vengeance is not ours to claim. Instead, we are called to practice self-control and trust Him fully.
Vengeance belongs to God alone—He is perfectly just and compassionate. Unlike us, His judgments are never clouded by anger or pain. When we choose to withhold our natural impulse to retaliate, we exercise a beautiful strength—a strength that reflects God’s grace working through us.
Self-control here means more than just holding back anger; it means surrendering our desire for justice to God’s loving hands. It’s a humble act of faith that says, “Lord, I may not see fairness right now, but I trust You to make things right in Your perfect timing.”
This can be especially hard because we care deeply about relationships and justice. But when we cling to revenge, bitterness can take root and damage our hearts. Choosing self-control protects our peace and opens the door for God’s healing and restoration.
So, dear sister, when you feel the urge to strike back or carry a grudge, pause and remember this promise: God sees your pain and He will repay. Pray for His peace and the strength to trust Him, knowing that His justice is far greater than ours. Rest in His perfect love—and let Him be your defender.
