Freely Speaking Audio Devotion

Sep 17, 2025    Marge Webb

Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

Today’s devotion was written by Marge Webb.

“Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7 NIV).

I remember celebrating one Christmas in my maternal grandmother’s elegantly decorated second-story apartment in our little town of Ada, Oklahoma. It was the only Christmas we did not spend at our paternal grandmother’s house.

I also remember pacing around by the backstairs anxiously awaiting the arrival of my oldest sister Elaine and her husband Jack. They were my last hope of receiving what I really wanted for Christmas that year. Just like Ralphie in the movie A Christmas Story, I wanted a bowling set just as much as he wanted that Red Ryder BB gun.

Waiting on something we really want is hard, especially when it comes to our prayers. Have you waited months or even years for the Lord to answer a prayer? I have experienced many times of waiting in my lifetime and each season was long and arduous.

The bible is full of examples of how we wait. Sometimes we wait well, and sometimes we take matters into our own hands.

Sarah and Elizabeth waited until about age 90 to conceive a child. Sarah decided that God needed some help with the plan, so she devised her own strategy. The decision to let her husband sleep with her handmaiden and the consequential birth of Ishmael resulted in a generational conflict evident to this day.

Today’s verse reminds us to wait patiently on the Lord and trust His timing. We must resist devising our own schemes because often our plans fail. We must trust the word of God which says that He makes all things beautiful in His time.

I did get that bowling set that I longed for that year, and so many blessings from God since then.

Perhaps you are waiting on God for something; a wayward child to visit, a different job, or a new home because yours is falling apart. Be assured of this, God is true to His character. As you seek Him, He will act justly toward you in His timing.
