Welcome to Freely Speaking, an OHSOFREE devotional ministry where we share our hearts and trust God for transformation.

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17 ESV).

Do you ever have those days when you need a pick-me-up? It can be difficult to see past challenges when the weight of life's gray clouds hangs over us. In those moments, we often seek quick fixes or fleeting pleasures, hoping that a new experience or distraction will provide the relief we crave.

After a tough day, I'd often reach for a sugary snack, mindlessly scroll through social media, or binge-watch a favorite show. Yet, these temporary fixes often leave me feeling empty or unsettled once the moment passes.

In today's verse, Paul offers us a perspective shift. While food and drink are necessary for our well-being, he tells us that they are not the ultimate source of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is much more than what we consume or experience. It is about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Righteousness—the right standing we have with God through Christ—brings a deep, unshakable peace. This peace isn't dependent on our circumstances but on the assurance that God is with us. Out of this peace, joy flows. And it's not just any joy, but a deep joy that permeates every part of our being, growing stronger as our faith flourishes, empowering us to face life's challenges.

We don't need to chase after temporary highs or the next big thrill to find joy. True joy is a gift that grows within us as we walk in the Spirit, rooted in His righteousness and peace. It's the joy that remains, even when life's storms roll in, a constant source of comfort and reassurance.

So, next time you're feeling down or searching for a pick-me-up, remember that true joy is found in the kingdom of God. Righteousness, peace, and joy dwell in His presence, nurtured by the Holy Spirit. This is where we find our true connection and fulfillment.
